Skyroot Becomes India’s First Space Unicorn Ahead of Launch

Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has entered unicorn status after raising $60 million in fresh funding. The company’s valuation now stands at about $1.1 billion. This makes it India’s first space technology unicorn and marks a major step for the country’s private space industry.
The company is now preparing for its first orbital rocket launch, expected in June. This mission will test its commercial launch capabilities. Skyroot is building its position in India’s growing space economy. It focuses on low-cost, scalable rockets for small satellite missions.
Sherpalo Ventures and Singapore’s GIC led the funding round. BlackRock and other global investors also took part. The funding will help Skyroot expand production, improve engineering work, and speed up future launches.
A large share of the investment will support new manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad. Skyroot builds its Vikram rocket series there. These rockets target the fast-growing small satellite market. Demand is rising from telecom, earth observation, and research sectors.
The company is also running more tests and simulations before its orbital mission. Engineers are working to improve reliability and reduce the time between launches. This is key as competition grows in the global private space sector.
Skyroot’s achievement reflects stronger private participation in India’s space industry. Policy changes have made it easier for startups to enter commercial space operations alongside ISRO.
Investors see strong growth potential in the sector over the next decade. More private companies are now entering the market, especially in small satellite launches. This is expected to increase competition and innovation.
If Skyroot’s orbital launch succeeds, it could boost India’s standing in the global commercial space race.
