Atletico Madrid arrived at Spotify Camp Nou as underdogs and left with a two-goal advantage that has handed them firm control of their Champions League quarter-final. Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth struck as Atletico upset 10-man Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The result ended a remarkable home run for the Catalans: Atletico produced a huge defensive stand to keep Barcelona from scoring at home for the first time in 40 matches.

Barcelona were the better side for the opening 40 minutes, pressing Atletico back and generating the clearer opportunities. Barça dominated for long periods in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at Camp Nou, which represented the teams’ fifth meeting of the season and their second in four days, following the Blaugrana’s 2-1 away win in LaLiga on Saturday. A Marcus Rashford goal was ruled out for offside against Lamine Yamal, and the hosts looked capable of taking the lead.

Then, in the space of two minutes, the match turned completely. Pau Cubarsi clipped Giuliano Simeone as the winger ran past him and in on goal in the 41st minute, resulting in the denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and Cubarsi being sent off after video review. Worse followed immediately. Alvarez curled home a stunning free kick after the dismissal of Cubarsí, sending his side into the break with the lead.

Hansi Flick reacted at half-time, withdrawing Robert Lewandowski and Pedri, the latter already on a booking, and sending on Gavi and Fermin Lopez in search of energy. Even with ten men, Barcelona continued to push. The hosts finished with 18 shots to Atletico Madrid’s five and led the expected goals count by 1.16 to 0.45. But clinical finishing from the visitors told the real story. In the 70th minute, substitute Sorloth delivered a major second blow to Barcelona’s hopes. Matteo Ruggeri advanced on the left and sent a first-time cross into the area, and Sorloth arrived with perfect timing to guide a controlled left footed finish into the far corner.

The result carried deep historical significance for both clubs. Atletico won away from home in a Champions League knockout stage match for the first time in seven attempts, their first such win since beating Manchester United 1-0 in the 2021-22 round of 16. For Cubarsi, the moment was also a grim milestone: he became the first player in Champions League history to be sent off twice as a teenager, with the previous red card coming against Benfica in the 2024-25 round of 16.

After the final whistle, Diego Simeone reflected on earning his first-ever victory at Camp Nou as Atletico manager. The Argentine, who has led the club for nearly 15 years, maintained his usual composure while acknowledging the scale of the result. Flick, meanwhile, refused to concede the tie was over. We have the quality to win there, he said. It will be tough, but it is our great goal to reach the final.

The match was not just decided by the sending off. A separate incident in the 54th minute has since escalated into a formal dispute. Atletico defender Marc Pubill touched a ball passed to him by goalkeeper Juan Musso with his hand, to set it still to take the goal-kick himself, seemingly believing it had not yet been live. Referee Kovacs allowed the goal-kick to be retaken without further action, and the VAR, identified by Flick as German official Christian Dingert, did not intervene.

Barça were incensed, appealing for a penalty, but referee Istvan Kovacs did not deem it a spot kick, and the VAR did not intervene. Flick was direct in his assessment: For me, it’s a clear red card, well, a second yellow card and a penalty. I can’t believe it’s not a red card. It feels not good. It feels unfair. The VAR was very focused today for Atletico. It’s a German guy, so thanks Germany.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo called the incident “absurd but a clear penalty.” Atletico coach Simeone took the opposite view, arguing there was “common sense” in how the referee interpreted the play.

The day after, Barcelona escalated the matter formally. Barcelona announced that the club’s legal department filed a formal complaint with UEFA regarding the events in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Atletico de Madrid, focusing on the 54th-minute handball incident and what the club described as a serious failure by VAR to intervene. The club’s statement went further, asserting that this is not the first time that, in recent editions of the UEFA Champions League, incomprehensible refereeing decisions have seriously harmed the team, creating a clear comparative disadvantage. Barcelona have requested an investigation, access to the referee’s communications, and formal acknowledgment of any errors found.
