Joe Launchbury Retirement: A Decade at the Top for England
Launchbury first pulled on the England shirt in 2012. Over the next decade, furthermore, he accumulated 70 international caps, a remarkable total for a position that demands extraordinary physical output. Additionally, his contributions helped England to three Six Nations titles in 2016, 2017, and 2020.
The 2016 campaign holds special significance. England not only claimed the Six Nations that year but also secured a Grand Slam, going unbeaten throughout the tournament. Launchbury was a key figure in that pack. Moreover, he carried that form into successive World Cup cycles, featuring at both the 2015 edition on home soil and the 2019 tournament in Japan.
His final England appearance came during the 2022 Six Nations. By that point, he had already given over a decade of consistent service to the national team.
From Wasps to Japan to Harlequins
Beyond international rugby, Launchbury built his club career primarily at Wasps. He became one of the most respected forwards in the Gallagher Premiership during his time at the club. However, Wasps’ financial collapse in 2022 ended that chapter abruptly.
Rather than simply finding another Premiership club, Launchbury chose a different path. He moved to Japan, signing with Toyota Verblitz for a season. That experience broadened his career in a meaningful way. Then, in 2023, he returned to English rugby by joining Harlequins, where he has since made 50 appearances for the club.
This season, however, his involvement has been limited. He has featured just six times, and the announcement, therefore, comes as no great surprise.
Launchbury spoke directly to Harlequins’ official website about his decision. His words reflect a man at peace with the timing.
“It has been coming for a while, and it is certainly no secret, but the time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season,” he said.
He also spoke warmly about the people who shaped his journey. “To my team-mates, past and present, thank you. The friendships we have built go far beyond rugby. Not a day went by where I did not enjoy being around the people I was lucky enough to call teammates. You made every challenge worthwhile,” he added.
Furthermore, he acknowledged the physical toll the game has taken. “I have given my all to my career, and my body is telling me it needs a break,” he said. Nevertheless, Launchbury left the door open for a future role in the game. He expressed hope to stay involved while also prioritising family, particularly watching his children grow up.
