ChatGPT visual ads are about to change how sponsored content looks inside OpenAI’s chatbot. OpenAI announced on Monday that it will begin testing the new format in the United States later this month. The ads will first appear while users generate images.
Until now, ChatGPT ads have stayed simple. The Verge reports that OpenAI first added ads to ChatGPT in February. Those ads showed a company name, logo and link in a labeled sponsored block below the chat. The new format shifts that approach toward pictures. Sponsored images of products and services will appear during image generation. OpenAI says the ads will carry clear labels and stay separate from the image a user creates.
OpenAI also moved to ease trust concerns. The company said in its announcement that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Guardrails will also keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversations. Moreover, ChatGPT Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers will not see any ads.
Only an initial group of advertisers will join the test. Meanwhile, OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and attribution partnerships. It is also developing new ways to judge whether a conversation suits an advertiser’s brand. Furthermore, the company plans to test more ad formats in the future.
ChatGPT visual ads also show how OpenAI hopes to earn money from its free tier. The company must balance that goal against user trust. If the images feel intrusive, users will say so loudly. Therefore, this test will show whether sponsored visuals can fit naturally into creative sessions.
