ASML, Tata Sign India Fab Deal in The Hague

India’s semiconductor ambitions just got a powerful partner. ASML and Tata Electronics signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support India’s first commercial 300mm chip fabrication facility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the signing during his state visit to the Netherlands. Dutch PM Rob Jetten was also present. The partnership marks a pivotal milestone for India’s drive to build a domestic semiconductor industry.

The Dutch company will provide its full suite of lithography tools and solutions. These tools will help establish and ramp up the Dholera fabrication facility. In addition, both companies will collaborate on workforce training, supply chain development, and research infrastructure. Lithography is the process that etches circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. Without it, no chip gets made. Therefore, ASML’s involvement is foundational, not supplementary.

ASML Tata Electronics India Semiconductor Fab: Scale and Targets

Dholera facility carries a total planned investment of $11 billion. The plant will manufacture chips for automotive, mobile devices, AI, and other key global segments. Technology nodes include 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm, covering the mature-node chips that power roughly 70% of global semiconductor demand. The plant could eventually support 50,000 wafer starts per month. Tata Electronics previously partnered with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation to access that process technology portfolio. The ASML partnership now adds the critical equipment layer to complete that ecosystem.

India’s Broader Chip Push

India currently has eight semiconductor-related projects underway. A separate Tata Electronics facility in Gujarat carries a $14 billion value. ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet said India’s semiconductor sector presents “many compelling opportunities.” ASML holds a 90% market share in lithography globally. Its tools power fabs at TSMC, Samsung, and Intel. India now has that same technology working in its corner.
