xAI’s Voice Cloning Feature Can Copy Your Voice in Under 60 Seconds

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has rolled out a feature that makes xAI voice cloning as simple as talking for a minute. The new “Custom Voices” tool, now live on the xAI console, lets users create a personal voice clone from a short natural speech recording, with the cloned voice ready to use in under two minutes.

Once generated, the voice can be plugged directly into xAI’s text-to-speech and voice agent APIs opening the door for developers and creators to build applications that speak in their own voice. xAI says using cloned voices through the platform comes at no additional cost.

To guard against misuse, xAI built a two-step verification process into the feature. Users must first read a passphrase that is checked in real time, and the system then compares the voice characteristics of both recordings to confirm they belong to the same person. According to xAI, this makes it technically impossible to clone an existing audio recording or impersonate someone else’s voice.

The launch also brings a new Voice Library to the xAI console, featuring over 80 preinstalled voices spanning 28 languages, a significant expansion for developers building multilingual products.

Custom Voices builds on xAI’s recently launched Grok Speech-to-Text and Text-to-Speech APIs and its “Grok Voice Think Fast 1.0” voice agent model. xAI says that model is already powering real-world applications, including Starlink’s customer support and sales operations.

The xAI voice cloning capability arrives at a time when synthetic voice technology is advancing rapidly across the industry, with the gap between a real voice and an AI-generated one growing increasingly narrow.
