Venmo has launched its most significant app redesign in four years. The Venmo app redesign shifts the platform’s long-controversial privacy approach, finally making posts visible only to friends by default. Previously, all new users’ transactions were publicly visible to anyone on the platform. That era of radical transparency is now ending.

The revamp welcomes new users with a default setting that restricts posts to friends only. Furthermore, users who want full public visibility must now actively opt in. An updated money-sending screen will also display the transaction’s privacy status before it is sent. This means users will know exactly who sees each payment before it goes through.

The change is long overdue. Privacy problems with Venmo were first highlighted in 2018, when a researcher demonstrated how the API exposed alarming amounts of personal data. Then in 2021, BuzzFeed News tracked down President Joe Biden’s Venmo account simply because his profile was public by default. That incident forced Venmo to add a friend-list privacy toggle, but the core issue remained unaddressed until now.

Venmo SVP and GM Alexis Sowa said the goal is to give users “more visibility and control over what they share” to build genuine trust in the experience. Beyond privacy, the redesign also adds a revamped social feed with richer visuals and quick action buttons. Additionally, two new tabs, Send and Money, will launch in the coming months, alongside a Rewards tab that consolidates all limited-time offers.

Meanwhile, the timing of this overhaul carries extra weight. PayPal is restructuring to spin Venmo off as a standalone business unit, a move widely seen as laying the groundwork for a potential sale, with Stripe reportedly expressing interest in buying PayPal outright. In that context, a polished redesign looks less like routine upkeep and more like a strategic pitch to buyers.

Venmo is also under pressure to convert its 90 million active users into direct revenue, with a target of hitting $2 billion in annual revenue by 2027. The full redesign is expected to reach all users by this fall.
