Oscars Ban AI Actors and Scripts

Oscars Ban AI Actors and Scripts

Hollywood has been wrestling with this question for two years. On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave the clearest answer it has ever given: AI actors and AI scripts are not welcome at the Oscars.

The organisation behind the Academy Awards released new Oscar rules on Friday, including several that address the use of generative artificial intelligence. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said that only performances “credited in the film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent” will be eligible for Academy Awards.

The Academy also said it has the right to request more information about a film’s AI usage and “human authorship.” That clause matters. It gives the body the power to investigate, not just declare.

The decision marks the end of two years of ambiguity and sets a global precedent for the artistic value of human labour in the age of automation.

What Triggered the Oscars’ Ban on AI-Generated Actors

These rule changes come as an independent film is being developed with an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer. AI “actress” Tilly Norwood has also continued to make headlines. At the same time, new video models are pushing some filmmakers into public declarations of despair.

AI was also one of the biggest sticking points during the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023.

The Academy can request details on how a film used generative AI and other digital tools, including how much human involvement was involved. It will review each case at its discretion.

However, the rules do not ban AI from production entirely. AI tools used for visual effects, sound design, and film editing will still be eligible for nominations in those respective categories.

Meanwhile, outside Hollywood, at least one novel has been pulled by its publisher. Due to the apparent use of AI, other writers’ groups are declaring that AI usage makes work ineligible for awards.

Therefore, the Oscars’ ban on AI-generated actors is not just a Hollywood story. It is a signal that the broader creative world is drawing the same line. Awards will continue to mean human effort, human authorship, and human consent.
