OpenAI media acquisition strategy advanced dramatically after the company acquired TBPN, the fast-growing Technology Business Programming Network. Consequently, OpenAI completed its first media company acquisition and revealed broader ambitions for global AI discussions.
Former tech founders John Coogan and Jordi Hays host TBPN, a daily live show airing on YouTube and X. Additionally, the show spends three weekday hours discussing technology, business, artificial intelligence, and defense.
The show built a cult following in Silicon Valley, where insiders openly discuss industry issues and question influential tech leaders. Furthermore, TBPN secured sponsorships from fintech companies Ramp and Plaid, Google’s Gemini, and the New York Stock Exchange partnership.
Notably, the show generated $5 million in advertising revenue last year and expects to surpass $30 million during 2026. Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI paid a purchase price worth several hundred million dollars.
OpenAI’s head of AGI deployment, Fidji Simo, said TBPN will help people understand artificial intelligence’s daily-life impact worldwide. She also emphasized that OpenAI will fully protect TBPN’s editorial independence after completing the acquisition.
Consequently, the acquisition may concern critics because OpenAI purchased a show frequently discussing the company and competing artificial intelligence firms. Nevertheless, TBPN will operate under OpenAI’s strategy team and report directly to Chris Lehane, the company’s chief political operative.
In response, co-founder Jordi Hays said the team now wants to move from commentary to real-world impact in how the technology gets distributed and understood globally. Moreover, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly called TBPN his “favorite tech show” and expressed that he expected the show would not go easy on OpenAI after the deal.
