Google Gemini in Cars Is Finally Here!

Google is officially bringing Gemini into the driver’s seat. The tech giant announced on Thursday that it will begin rolling out Google Gemini in cars equipped with Google built-in, replacing the existing Google Assistant with a far more capable, conversational AI experience.

The timing is no coincidence. Just a day before Google’s announcement, General Motors revealed that Gemini is headed to roughly 4 million of its vehicles covering model year 2022 and newer across brands including Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC. But Google’s announcement made clear this won’t stop at GM. No specific automakers were named, signalling a much broader rollout across the industry.

The update lands first in the U.S. with English-language support, and crucially, it won’t be limited to brand-new vehicles. Drivers with compatible cars can receive the upgrade through an over-the-air software update, making Google Gemini in cars accessible to a wide base of existing owners.

Cars with Google built-in have been on the road since 2020, but this marks the platform’s biggest leap forward. With Gemini, drivers can make requests in natural, everyday language rather than structured commands. Ask it to find a highly rated outdoor restaurant along your route, and Gemini will pull relevant results from Google Maps, then field follow-ups on parking or dietary preferences without losing context.

Beyond navigation and dining, Gemini handles in-car controls like adjusting the heat, plays music on request, surfaces vehicle information, and even reads and helps compose replies to incoming messages all hands-free. For those who want a more open-ended exchange, Gemini Live currently in beta lets drivers tap a button or say “Hey Google, let’s talk” to start a real-time, flowing conversation while on the move.

Drivers signed into their Google accounts in eligible vehicles will be prompted to enable the upgrade. Once active, Gemini is accessible via voice, the on-screen microphone, or steering wheel controls.

Google says support for additional languages and regions is on the way, along with deeper integration with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Home turning the car into a connected hub rather than just a way to get from A to B.
