ECOWAS Startup Awards opened this week in Abuja, turning Nigeria’s capital into a regional deal room. Organisers picked 60 startups from more than 6,000 applications across the bloc’s 12 member states. The event runs from September 21 to September 30, mixing masterclasses, exhibitions and investor meetings. Twenty finalists will emerge to pitch live before a jury on September 30, according to the event’s official coverage.
The competition offers $65,000 in seed funding, and the winner takes home $30,000. Meanwhile, the first and second runners-up receive $20,000 and $15,000 respectively. Beyond the prize money, organisers expect the awards to unlock about $5 million in investment deals. Startups compete across six sectors, including FinTech, HealthTech, AgriTech and CleanTech. This structure pushes founders toward real deals, not just recognition.
Oluonye Peter, ECOWAS Acting Director for Private Sector and Industry, explained the thinking behind the programme. He said many founders build breakthrough products but still struggle to reach the market. Consequently, the commission designed a six-month mentorship programme for every winner. This support connects founders with venture capitalists, impact investors and financial institutions, organisers said in a statement. Henry Emejuo of the Pan African Alliance for SMEs added that the awards strengthen regional integration.
This second edition builds on the inaugural awards held in Niamey, Niger, back in 2021. That event drew 55 startups from 11 countries, prompting ECOWAS leaders to make it an annual fixture. Applications for the 2026 edition opened on August 3 and closed on August 31. More than 6,000 entrepreneurs applied through the official portal for a shot at the prize. Consequently, Abuja now hosts a bigger, more commercially driven showcase than before. For a bloc of 400 million people, the pitches on September 30 could signal fresh momentum for regional integration.
