Coinbase AI Agents Named After Ex-Executives Are Now Working Alongside Staff

Coinbase is taking its artificial intelligence ambitions inside the office. The leading crypto exchange is now testing Coinbase AI agents deployed directly into workplace tools like Slack and email, giving employees access to AI-powered teammates that can assist with strategy, planning, and creative thinking.

CEO Brian Armstrong revealed the development on X, saying the first two Coinbase AI agents have been named “Fred” and “Balaji,” inspired by former Coinbase executives Fred Ehrsam and Balaji Srinivasan. Each agent carries a distinct personality built around the qualities associated with its namesake.

“Fred” functions as a senior executive-style advisor. Employees can tap it to review documents, sharpen ideas, get feedback on strategic plans, and work through high-level decisions. “Balaji,” on the other hand, is described as an “agent of chaos and creativity,” built for long-term projects, innovation, and the kind of boundary-pushing thinking that challenges the status quo rather than just refining it.

Armstrong says the programme could grow fast. He suggested that employees may soon be able to spin up their own custom Coinbase AI agents for personal or team use, and he even floated the idea that the number of AI agents inside Coinbase could one day outnumber its human workforce. He also noted that future versions of these agents should develop their own identities rather than simply mimicking real people.

The internal agent rollout is only part of the picture. Earlier this year, Coinbase introduced “Agentic Wallets” , a product that allows AI agents to independently hold assets, make payments, trade tokens, earn yield, and carry out on-chain transactions. These wallets are linked to Coinbase’s x402 protocol, designed to power autonomous crypto payments without requiring human intervention at every step.

Taken together, the moves signal that Coinbase is building toward a future where Coinbase AI agents are not just productivity tools but active participants in both company operations and the broader crypto economy.
