A nuclear startup is attracting major investor attention with an unusual idea: putting nuclear power plants on water.
Bluecore Energy, a startup founded by former Uber Freight employee Kofi Asante, is developing small modular reactors (SMRs) mounted on floating barges. The company aims to provide clean electricity to ports and nearby infrastructure.
The idea could offer a different approach to deploying nuclear energy. Instead of building a conventional nuclear facility on land, Bluecore wants to develop floating power systems that can be positioned where electricity is needed.
And investors appear to be paying attention.
Bluecore Energy has reportedly raised $50 million in a seed round, just two months after launching, according to TechCrunch. The funding comes after the company previously announced a $10 million pre-seed round in July.
The startup says its technology could eventually produce enough electricity to power thousands of homes while serving energy-intensive infrastructure.
The timing of the funding is particularly notable. Raising $50 million at such an early stage highlights the growing investor interest in nuclear technology as demand for reliable electricity continues to rise.
AI data centres, ports and industrial facilities all require huge amounts of dependable power, creating opportunities for new energy technologies.
However, Bluecore’s concept still faces major technical, safety and regulatory challenges before floating nuclear reactors can become commercially viable.
For now, investors are betting on the possibility that nuclear power could become more flexible, mobile and easier to deploy.
