Cardamom, a startup founded by Zach and Sahil, has developed an AI-powered phone system that answers every call automatically, records customer orders, and sends them directly into existing restaurant POS platforms without requiring staff intervention.
The product acts as a fully automated AI voice line. It answers every incoming call, takes the order, and pushes it directly into the restaurant’s existing POS system, such as Toast or Square. Furthermore, it links each order to the caller’s phone number, creating a running record of who ordered what and when.
That last part is the real unlock for restaurant owners. Traditional POS systems record orders but strip out the customer’s identity. Consequently, a restaurant that handles hundreds of calls a week has no idea who its loyal regulars are. Cardamom fixes that by building a customer data layer from call activity alone.
The startup’s origin story is rooted in real kitchen experience. Zach started running restaurants at 17 and owned one by 19. He later worked under Michelin-trained chefs across five restaurants. After speaking with 32 restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area, the co-founders found a consistent pattern: phones rang off the hook, and orders slipped through the cracks.
Sahil, the CTO, brings strong technical credentials. He built and sold a company in his sophomore year, and his open-source tool crossed 110,000 installs. Together, they built Cardamom to solve the challenge of making AI understand a caller saying “same as last time” from a noisy kitchen.
