The company, formerly known as Grammarly, had spent months testing an internal notetaker before deciding to buy a finished product instead. That decision speaks to a wider shift: AI tools no longer just respond to prompts, they increasingly try to anticipate what a user needs next. Meetings, packed with decisions and action items, sit right at the center of that ambition.

Founded in 2020, Fathom has raised over $30 million and was valued at $94 million in 2024. Its free plan has attracted more than 400,000 monthly active users, and over a million people have used it to record a call. Superhuman’s CEO, Shishir Mehrotra, explained the reasoning behind buying rather than building, and his comments on the company’s blog laid out where the notetaker fits into the broader suite. He noted that internal experiments made clear how difficult it is to nail every part of meeting recording well.

Fathom’s CEO, Richard White, framed the deal differently, pointing to distribution rather than technology. He said building Superhuman’s existing infrastructure from scratch as a standalone company would have taken far longer. Consequently, joining a platform with a much larger user base made more sense than growing independently.
