OpenAI Campus Network Opens Applications for Student Clubs Worldwide

OpenAI has officially launched the OpenAI Campus Network, a new program inviting student clubs from universities and colleges around the world to apply for membership in what the company is calling an AI-powered campus community.
The initiative, announced on OpenAI’s official blog, is designed to connect student organizations with AI tools, event support, and resources to build campus-based AI communities. Student clubs that join the OpenAI Campus Network will gain access to support for hosting AI-focused events, workshops, and hackathons on their campuses.
This marks OpenAI’s first formal education initiative since ChatGPT exploded into public consciousness, giving the company a structured way to engage directly with university students who will become tomorrow’s AI practitioners.
The timing is hard to miss. Universities are currently scrambling to integrate AI into their curricula while grappling with academic integrity questions around tools like ChatGPT. By partnering directly with student organizations, OpenAI is positioning itself as a collaborative force in shaping how AI gets taught and used on campus, rather than simply the disruptive technology professors are trying to detect in essays.
The OpenAI Campus Network also enters a competitive space. Google’s Developer Student Clubs already operate at thousands of universities, while Microsoft’s Student Partner program has been cultivating campus advocates for years. OpenAI is entering a crowded field, but with arguably the most culturally relevant AI product in ChatGPT.
What remains notably absent from the announcement is detail about what “access to AI tools” actually means in practice. Whether participating clubs will receive free ChatGPT Plus or Enterprise subscriptions, API credits, or early access to new models has not been clarified, suggesting OpenAI may still be finalizing the program’s operational details.
Beyond community building, the program carries a clear strategic edge. Student club leaders who run OpenAI Campus Network events become natural recruiting targets for the company’s internship and research programs, giving OpenAI a long-term talent pipeline embedded directly in academic institutions.
Student organizations interested in joining can apply through the interest form on OpenAI’s official website.
No deadline for applications has been announced yet.
