Grok-powered custom timelines mark one of X’s most ambitious changes since its rebranding from Twitter for Premium iOS users. They let subscribers pin topics to their home tab while Grok’s AI handles feed curation and delivers personalized content streams.
X head of product Nikita Bier announced the feature on April 21, 2026, describing it as “one of our biggest changes to X.” The company said Grok-powered custom timelines span over 75 topics, covering broad categories like Business, Technology, and Sports. They also include niche interests such as Formula 1, Real Estate, and Gaming, offering diverse, highly personalized content options.
Pin a topic to your home tab, and Grok uses post understanding and algorithms to build a personalized feed for you. Crucially, the feeds are not built on traditional signals like keywords or hashtags. Instead, Grok reads and understands every post on the platform, then assigns topic labels based on deeper semantic analysis. X says this approach makes it meaningfully different from older recommendation systems, which rely on simpler signals like keywords or hashtags.
Users can pin up to 10 custom timelines and can search for topics or select from available categories. Religion was notably absent at launch as it did not meet X’s quality standards, with a rollout expected within two weeks.
The feature is currently exclusive to Premium and Premium Plus subscribers on iOS, with Android support described as coming “very soon.” Timelines configured on iOS will also appear on the web app once set up.
Alongside the Grok-powered custom timelines, X also broadened access to its Snooze Topics tool for Premium subscribers, allowing users to hide specific subjects, such as politics or sports, from the For You tab for 24 hours.
The launch coincides with X shutting down X Communities, a feature that had allowed users to build member-based groups around topics but had seen declining use. The pivot signals a clear strategic shift, moving from user-built communities toward AI-managed content streams.
The timing is significant. Meta continues to invest heavily in AI-powered recommendations across Instagram and Facebook, while TikTok’s algorithm remains the benchmark for addictive content delivery. X is betting that Grok’s deeper semantic understanding of posts gives it a competitive edge these rivals cannot easily copy.
Elon Musk previously signaled plans to introduce ads within Grok’s responses, tying the chatbot more directly to revenue streams overall. X aims to offset the cost of its AI infrastructure by monetizing Grok features and expanding advertising opportunities across platform.
