China AI Shopping Agents Replace the Search Bar

Shopping online in China no longer starts with a keyword. Alibaba, Meituan, JD.com, ByteDance, and Tencent are all replacing the traditional search bar with AI agents. These agents find, compare, and buy products through natural conversation. The scale is already enormous, and the pace is accelerating.
Alibaba Leads With Qwen and Taobao
Alibaba made the biggest move last week. The company integrated its Qwen AI assistant directly into Taobao, its largest marketplace. Qwen now has access to more than four billion products. A shopper describes what they want. The AI narrows options by budget, brand, or occasion. The purchase completes without the user leaving the chat window. Alipay, Alibaba’s payment arm, processed 120 million AI-agent transactions in a single week in February. That was the first time any AI-native payment product reached that volume. Qwen has also reached 300 million monthly active users across Alibaba’s consumer apps.
China AI Shopping Agents Across Every Platform
Alibaba is not alone. ByteDance upgraded its Doubao chatbot in December 2025. Doubao now books tickets and handles e-commerce through Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. Meanwhile, Meituan and JD.com are building similar conversational shopping tools into their own, and Tencent’s WeChat is also pushing into agentic commerce. The goal across all these platforms is the same. Remove the search bar. Replace it with a conversation that ends in a completed transaction.
What This Means for Global E-Commerce
The numbers give Western platforms a reason to pay close attention. McKinsey estimated that AI agents could generate more than $1 trillion in value for US businesses by 2030. China is already running the live experiment at scale. About half of all consumers globally already use AI when searching online, according to McKinsey’s 2025 study. However, no Western platform has yet matched China’s level of agentic commerce integration. It was reported that Taobao’s Qwen-powered assistant also includes virtual try-ons and 30-day price tracking. As a result, the buying experience now spans discovery, comparison, payment, and post-sale support, all within a single chat thread.
