Anthropic Appoints Theo Hourmouzis as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Opens Sydney Office

Anthropic has named Theo Hourmouzis as its Anthropic Australia New Zealand General Manager, a move that signals a deeper and more deliberate commitment to the region. The appointment came alongside the official opening of Anthropic’s Sydney office, the company’s latest expansion in Asia Pacific following recent office launches in Tokyo, Bengaluru, and Seoul.
Hourmouzis brings over two decades of technology leadership across the Asia Pacific region to the role. He joins from Snowflake, where he served as Senior Vice President for Australia, New Zealand, and ASEAN, guiding enterprise and public sector organisations in financial services, retail, aviation, and government toward meaningful AI adoption. His mandate at Anthropic is to lead the local team and build a strategy centered on Australian and New Zealand customers.
“Organizations across Australia and New Zealand are thinking carefully about how to adopt AI, and they want partners who take safety and rigor as seriously as they take the opportunity,” Hourmouzis said. “That’s what drew me to Anthropic.”
The appointment builds on an MOU Anthropic recently signed with the Australian government, reinforcing a shared vision of responsible AI development driving economic growth. Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s Managing Director of International, said the hire reflects that conviction directly.
The Sydney team will deepen ties with enterprise clients including Commonwealth Bank and Quantium, alongside AI for Science research partners such as Australian National University, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and Curtin University.
On the partnerships front, Anthropic also announced collaborations with two major Australian-born platforms. Canva will integrate its Design Engine and Visual Suite into the newly launched Claude Design by Anthropic Labs, while Xero has entered a multi-year deal that will embed Claude directly into its platform and bring Xero’s financial tools into Claude.ai.
In the nonprofit space, YMCA South Australia operating across more than 65 community locations has joined as a Claude for Nonprofits partner. The organisation is using Claude to turn complex operational data into actionable insights and slash the time spent on branded content production.
With a credible local leader now at the helm, the Sydney office positions Anthropic to move beyond experimentation and into infrastructure-level AI adoption across the region.
