Elon Musk says his tunneling company, The Boring Company, is working on a “simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel” between Austin and San Antonio, designed for speeds above 200 miles per hour. He shared the update on X on September 20, 2026.
From 2.5 Hours To Under 30 Minutes
According to Musk, traffic congestion currently makes the drive between the two Texas cities take up to 2.5 hours. The Boring Company’s proposed tunnel aims to bring that down to a consistent under 30 minutes, regardless of road conditions above ground.
The Boring Company’s own account followed up on the announcement, noting that because the system runs express with no stops, a rider could travel from an Austin parking lot to a San Antonio restaurant in about half an hour.
No route, cost, or timeline announced yet. The Boring Company floated similarly ambitious projects before, including tunnels in Chicago and Los Angeles, that never got built, though its Las Vegas Loop is already up and running.
With a recent $3 billion funding round behind it, this Texas project may have a better shot at moving forward than some of its predecessors.
